I thought the same thing (aftermarket pop-top)  but then I saw another
vanagon recently with the same top and color as mine (gold) with a
sunroof-  although it wasn't a syncro...

All the factory week
                enders had a angled lift top. All had the rear seat/bed
but most had the rear
                facing center seats.
