I had something similar to this happen to my 91 Golf (Digifant).
Unfortunate it turned out the be the ECU (main computer).  Ouch...$750
for the part plus shipping and installation.  Was on vacation at the
time so I couldn't look around for a used/cheaper part and paid full
VW prices.
