Joe,
A/C relay on the D pillar is the rightmost, tall and black one which is the
same as Golf/Jetta's.  The middle one is evaporator fan relay and the
leftmost is compressor clutch relay.  VW dealer should be able to help you
by telling them you need an evaporator fan relay.  It will be very
expensive (A/C relay is $45) may be you should try the junk yard first.
BTW, check all the A/C relay connectors for bad connections chances are you
will find some.  See Lawrence Dongilli's excellent post "Re: Air
Conditioning wiring burning  (Urgent....Please Read Me!)" on 8/9/98.

hello everyone.

i have a small problem. my a/c went out and i've traced it back to a relay
in
the rear of the vehicle. i'm pretty sure it's the a/c relay, but coming
from
the previous owner there's not cap on this bad relay i pulled out, so i
don't
know the part number or what to order to make my vanagon chill again. if
anybody out there has a 1986 vanagon gl (or comparable) with a/c could you
possibly take the driver side rear panel off and write down the part number
off of the middle (second from left) relay for me? i would greatly
appreciate
it.
