In a message dated 98-08-12 18:20:33 EDT, you write: << Will an older vanagon tranny, 1980 work in a 1984 waterboxer? >> Yes and no. While it is a very similar unit it does have its differences. For example it has a nose cone mounted side shift arrangement while the later water cooled 091-1 shifts from the middle of the main case on the opposite side. The linkage is also different and you'll have to either change it completely or add a adapter kit (I think Transform? or is that the later gearbox into an aircooled van??) for your existing linkage. When properly built I really do not see any advantage of one over the other and price-wise they are close. I think the biggest hassle would be trying to adapt one to the other linkage-wise. Someone on this list has done this recently, I believe, and maybe able to shed some light on it. Todd Hill VolksWerks Transaxles Olympia, WA
