You might want to invest in a propane detector.  Wouldn't stop the gas from
getting turned on (unless you get the expensive kind that controls the gas
valve), but at least the beeping would turn that 50/50 chance of a cigarette
into something closer to 0.  I've put one in my van, just on general safety
principles.
