It's a new battery, I am > using the choke, the glow plugs are warmed.. (ed...) This maybe completely off the wall but I thought I'd offer it... I have a gas '80 VanagonL...got it last year...I suspect the fuel injection harness might be similar to your diesel...I think that between '79-83 or so a lot of this stuff was similar or the same. I got my Vanagon cheap because the guy that had it said it had a power problem and he couldn't solve it...I determined that while it ran and idled fine there must be something wrong sensor or computerwise so that it didn't know how much gas to deliver... Eventually, I found one broken wire on the harness resistor which is at the end of the harness and sort of looks like a silver box with four white cermic cylinders inside...with a connector from the harness on one end...This provides the harness with resistance and the computer needs it to understand the sensor information...mine had one broken wire which managed to really make it limp along. Maybe your connector is loose, maybe the resistor is shot...maybe, maybe... I know it is not an answer but it might be a place to look.
