Good day Tim. Sorry to take so long. I got your message on a Friday and the various Government Departments had closed for the weekend. Well its Monday morning hers and here is the information so far. 1. To import a vehicle into Australia for whatever reason you require an Import Permit from the Federal Office of Road Transport/Safety. They are located in our Capital City, Canberra and are sending me a brochure on the requirements. I ran by them the scenario of a visitor coming for a few months wishing to bring his vehicle. On face value no problem. However, we are dealing with Govt. remember. Ok once you have the permit to import then you arrange to bring it into Australia. Then you go along to the Local State authorities who can issue a visitors registration permit for overseas registered vehicles to drive within Australia. These permits are only valid for the life of the vehicles original registration in its home state/country. The local State motor vehicle authorities they will issue a permit only to cover the un-expired registration period of the vehicle. There are no extensions of these permits. After that the vehicle must be converted to right hand drive and it must be certified by a qualified local engineer. Conversations are not difficult but take time due to availability of parts etc. This information covered covers the State of New South Wales but most of the other states have almost identical requirements. Hope this helps. Any further information required let me know. Ray.
