Overheating engine will fry that tranny 'cause of the tranny cooler.  Check
the filter and if it looks ok then you might be in for a rebuild.  I am not
sure if you can adjust the bands on the tranny.  I know you can on the Rabbit
autos and the Vanagon tranny is based on that.
