I guess I missed the original post.  I had the same problem.  I couldn't
figure out if it was lean or what.

Turned out I was running on 3 cylinders!  The engind was overheating, and
that caused the pipe to glow orange. Apparently a mouse had chewed through
an injector wire that was hidden under the airbox.
