I recently replaced the drums on my 85 Vanagon and the brakes started
squealing something awful.  Only when I break hard does the squealing
stop.

Well the shoes on one side were pretty worn so I just replaced them and
now the squealing is even worse and is not alleviated when I break
harder.

My preliminary conclusion is that the drums and shoes are not
compatible. I bought the shoes from The Bus Depot and the Drums from the
Parts Place (before I found out about the Bus Depot).  Any ideas?
