<< Hello-
I was wondering if anyone has a method of seating the circlip on the
front inner CVs on a syncro that does not involve a shop press (as I don't
have access to one). I cannot seem to get the circlip seated in the groove
as the dished washer does not seem to allow the joint to give the circlip
enough clearance. I have tried the only two things I thought of - attempting
to
pound/seat one edge of the circlip with a drift and mallet and to squeeze the
hopefully partially seated circlip into place. Needless to say, this
combination did not work.
Any advice is most appreciated as otherwise, I am off to the local
shop so they can press the hub down and pop the little sucker into place.
While this is actually for my Golf, it is just a warm up for when I repack
the front syncro joints in a couple weeks (the Bentley's show the dished
washer
used in both joints, so I expect I will hit this problem again)...

This is really simple to seat, with the driveshaft in a vise, circlip on, find
a socket that is slightly larger than splines on the shaft, place the socket
over the circlip, give the socket a good whack with a hammer. By doing this,
you will momentarily compress the spring washer on the other side of the joint
alowing the circlip fall into place. Good luck. Let me know how it went.
See ya, Michael
