Ladies and gentleman, we have a winner!
It appears that after, 6 months or so of intermittent sputtering, cutting out
(especially at 2800 rpm), hesitation and the general psychological torture of
my boyfriend and myself, (what to speak of 6 trips to 3 different vw
mechanics), we appear to have found the culprit.

I am bolding stepping up to say (I think) we have it fixed!

It was the air box. We replaced my old air box with a used one, and my westy
is running beautifully....not only not cutting out, but she responds better
every time I step on the gas...Feels like a new van. It's a miracle.
