Somewhere I have one of the first magazine ads introducing Mobil1 (early
'70s?) in which they were claiming oil changes of 25K miles/once a
year...probably had to knock it off because of pressure from manufacturers
(they now want you to follow mfgr's rec's)...hhmmmm, they sell more oil
this way, right?

Yes, you remembered right. When I first used it in the 70's, I use to leave it in for 20K miles.. It is good for more than that but it does get very dirty and smelly!.. I decide that it's really pushing it.. so when I had my first brand new car (Audi Fox), I decide to go 10K per change.

As for manufacturers recommendation of 3K miles, that is a very conservative number even for regular oil... and I think it is only in the US (What do they recommend in Canada?) I know in the UK, the recommendation is 10K miles per change even for non-synethics and back in Malaysia, the recomendation is "once a year"..
