After driving Volkswagen diesels exclusively for the past 17 years, Id
like to suggest synthetic 5W30 (Mobil 1 or an equivelant) I can tell you
that engine will spin over almost like it was summer in comparison to a
regular 10W30 oil at -20F temps. It's much thinner at cold temps. Also
check your glow plugs; and make sure your battery is up to snuff (Bigger
is really better). You must spin the engine fast enough, to get
compression temperatures hot enough to ignite the fuel. My VW's started
well without plug-ins, at temps -25F. Synthetic oil will also flow
better and lubricate you engine more quickly in severe winter temps
during startup. Joel
