Well, it's not exactly an answer, but I have an '86 gas tank in
my '81.  Have to swap the filler tube and everything connected to
it, but otherwise fits fine.  As was discussed here some time ago,
the '86 gas tank likes to spew fuel around when it fills up.

Weird.
