If you're planning to swap in a motor, be advised that Fed standards are slowly being implemented throughout the country, a visible check of your motor may or may not trigger an inspector to notice the slant 5 instead of the wasserboxer, yet if they find out a swap has been done, (yes they -do- ask FBI type questions) and they run the serial numbers on the block that show the engine older than the car: you are out of compliance and in the nether world of dealing with the Feds who are very nasty about this presently. Bottom line, if planning a Vanagon motor swap in, purchase a motor of the year of your van or newer to avoid trouble. >> Much ado about NOTHING. this is unnecessary, and will be cost ineffective. maybe texas is different, but in Pa. all the vehicle needs to do is pass emissions (if you live within a major city limits) regardless of engine. where i live (out of city limits) i dont have to have emissions.. i could have a fire breathing 440 cubic inch hemi in my vanagon and it would be legal as long as i passed Pa. state inspection (which is not emissions) chris allentown, pa forget the 5cyl, lets go MOPAR MADNESS!!!!! ;<)
