Subject:Re: Roof Racks for Westy Poptop

I have always shuddered at the idea of drilling into the top of my Westy. I have always thought it would be a better idea to buy some high rise feet and mount the rack above the luggage rack, clamped to the rain gutters. Part of the bike mounts would stick out over the front a bit but I like it better than drilling the roof. For sailboard gear you might add a spongy cradle at the rear of the top but the rack would carry most of the load.
Or you could clamp the high rise feet over the top at the back but remember to remove them to raise the roof.

Subject: Roof Racks for Westy Poptop

We just bought a 1984 Westy. A previous owner had affixed roof racks to
the poptop, as evidenced by the eight carriage bolts still in place.
Unfortunately (or perhaps fortunately), no artificial rain gutters or racks
came with the beast. We'd like to transport our sailboard gear on top.

Any thoughts about rack attachment methods/brands/placement/spacing on the
poptop?
