Hi folks I saw a few posts on salted roads and have to vote for Ohio as one of the worst. Having grown up around Lake Erie, I had to give up my VW addiction back around 1981 because all my favorite vehicles had rusted away. I had friends also who worked for the Dept. of Transportation who mentioned they needed to use up salt to rotate the stock, so to speak, and dumped even more than was needed. We even nick-named Cleveland area the rust belt. Needless to say, I was amazed when moving here for my job back in '95 that there were zillions of older VW's and particularly Vanagons (all with no rust!) in the town of Davis where I first worked. This is a college town (UC Davis) and many great deals can be had especially between semesters when money is needed badly. I turned down a '70 bus a couple years ago for only $900 in near perfect shape. I could kick myself for this one! I have never seen so many Vanagons or Westy's as there are in Davis. Here are a few examples from today's Sacramento Bee autofinder: (http://www.sacbee.com/autofinder/) WESTFALIA '76. $1100/ofr. needs little work, (530) 647-2244 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VANAGON '90, 4sp, ac, Exc cond! Call (530) 758-2406 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VANAGON '85 great cond. rblt trans & clutch. $1500. 443-3573 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- VANAGON '85, blue, perfect body. $3500/best offer. 922-5539 It is almost worth the price of airfare and travel expenses to come out and pick one up. I also work out of Washington DC part time and have seen many nice vehicles back there. Jim Snyder www.mother.com/~jsnyder/vanagon.html
