An interesting new device to rapidly speed up engine warming is available -
it is available at Ford dealerships for Navigators (as a dealer installed
option), but could work for Vanagons too.

A neat idea, it auto-stores your hot coolant in basically, a big dewar
container, and then exchanges it for cold coolant when you start. Claims are
faster warm-up, lower emissions, increased fuel economy over vehicle without
unit. Even after several days.
