I read once that it was Michigan that had the most boats...but now I wonder if that was per capita or total registrations? I used to pull my 16' Checkmate behind my Vanagon all the time. It was a small, light boat with a big engine! Complete opposite power:weight ratio than the Van. I also towed a '67 bug from Atlanta to DC with that van. The funniest part of that trip was just North of Atlanta. There are a bunch of rolling hills on that section of I-85. I would get a running start on the long downhill, maybe up to 80mph, then use the momentum to carry me up to the top of the next hill. At the crest of these long, gentle hills my speed would be back down to 45-50mph. Back to the funny part. I had just started up a hill with a full head of steam from my downhill acceleration, and I was in the fast lane. I passed another Vanagon in the #2 lane that was doing about 60. I got a good look at the driver's face as he noticed me passing him, and then noticed the extra vehicle I was towing!
