Jason--
You are fortunate that your Westy is white. VW Pastel White (pastelweis) is
fairly easy to match and blend, and the paint used (at least on our White
1982) is a lacquer, which makes "cutting" the repair in.
Most bigger auto paint shops will custom mix your paint and put it in a
pressurized aerosol can. The last time I had this done was about 12 years
ago, and it was between $10 & $15. If the rust spots are small, VW sells
small (10 cc) containers of the VW lacquer with a wee brush and a wee rust
remover tool. Works great for scratches and rock chips. About $5.
San Diego to Troy, New York...must have been some big money, or a sweet
partner for that move...:)

Greetings fellow vanageeks,
It will soon be time to bring the ol' girl out from her winter
slumber. There
are a few area of rust and scratches that need to be sanded, primed and
painted. Are there any suggestions on brands of spray primer and paint
that I
should use to do this touch-up? Also any tips or tricks would be
appreciated.
One more question: Here is my cheesy made it and forgot about it website:

Judging from the pictures does anyone of have a suggestion of what color,
brand
of spray paint I should use? I'd love to bring it to a shop, but alas, she
needs a new trans and my financial overseer (wife) will not sign off.
Thanks for your time.
