When me westy spit out a new electrical problem for me this weekend we turned around, went home, jumped in the Subaru and went on our way. Seems I have done this an awfully large number of times in the year I have owned my bus. I really have to think about the current running condition of the bus before considering if I will drive it. The Subaru has ALWAYS taken me everywhere. Never even think about it. I realized that same day we dropped the bus off at home and switched to the Subaru- while pondering the likely problems cause- that I have no idea how the fuel injection/ emissions/ sensors or really anything about the engine in the Subaru. I have had it since new in 1990 and driven the shit out of it for 145,000 miles. The ONE (1) time I could not drive it in all those years was a 15F day and the 6 year old battery just gave its last crank.
As I said, I have had me westy for 1 year. It is a 91 with about 123,000 miles and I have the beginnings of a masters in Vanagon mechanics!
Whats wrong with these German engineered wonders? Why so sensitive? It is entirely likely that some of the sensors in the Subaru are shot but it dose not care (apparently). Oh well. I whish I could sleep and cook in the Subaru. I whish I could jump in the westy for a trip at any time without even a blink.
