  In my 82 Westy, I installed "artificial rain gutters" for the Thule roof
rack I installed in my poptop. It requires some metal fabrication and
drilling. I used a pair of old roof racks from my  Civic (with extended
bars). Being the gutterless model, the rack basically sits on the roof
rather than clamping to it, distributing the load evenly against the roof.
The clamps carry a minimum load to avoid damaging the sides of the poptop.
I carry four sailboards with a quiver of sails, so far, the system works
well.
