Something to check when doing routine maintenance. The muffler hanger. Mine apparently broke, but the system on the vanagon is so short that the muffler didn't noticeably drop like it would on a front engine vehicle. Hung fine until the catalytic converter broke from the stress. Had I known, I could have replaced the hanger for a lot less than the converter.
