I know it's fun to make stuff yourself, but you might consider that JC
Whitney has front screens with magnetic strips for the Vanagon (not a
generic part) for about $25.  I've got them and they work great.  Of
course, they're intended for camping, not driving.

Look in the van and RV section of their catalog.
