Kari, on mine the oil will run along one side of the stick or the other,
but the level is where it crosses and wets the whole surface of the stick.
It's a minor pain but not in the "can't tell" class.  If you have oil on
the side(s) and none wetting the full stick, I bet your oil is too low to
register.  If that's not what you mean, could there be some paper towel or
something in the dip tube, smearing things?
