While I haven't owned a Syncro that long my gut feeling at this point is
that a Syncro would be comparable to a 2wd Vanagon (in similar mechanical
condition) as far as regular *monthly* maintenance is concerned.

However, long term maintenance items such as 4wd system, extra CV joints,
transmission, suspension, etc. will be *MUCH* more expensive due to the
added complexity and/or specialized (rare) nature of the parts.
