I had the same problem.  The solution was to notch the rain gutters so that
the rear rack was able to hang over about 3" (75mm or so).  Now I can take
my Grumman Eagle 18 anywhere the van goes.

Plus the sight of a great big grumman canoe on the top of turd (the worlds
worst looking '82 westy) always raises eyebrows with the SUV set.
