I assume you are talking about the Syncro transmission...

The "pushing down to get into first" problem can be caused by a couple of
things.  The thing that solved it for me was replacing the pin that attached
the shift linkage to the arm on the trans and adjusting the linkage.  After
crawling around under there, I decided to pay somebody to do it for me - $45
parts and labor.
