Art, on the EV's the dash gauges have a similar (and very common) problem,
and the fix is re-soldering the post at the back of the gauge.  Mechanics go
behind the dash and do the resoldering.  Though I have never heard anyone
mention this problem with a Vanagon... it may be worth lookinginto.
