This weekend I decided to head south to LA from Hayward CA to see my wife Jeanette. As I pulled into street where she works, my clutch got soft and i couldn't shift gears. I managed to pull into her work parking lot and stop our Vanagon GL. Upon inspecting under the car, I noticed a slight amount of fluid on the left side of the transmission case. Saturday I called our VW mechanic in Sunset Beach and he said it was probably the Clutch slave hydraulic cylinder that sits over the transmission on that side of the case. I called the local VW Parts house and they had one in stock. I replaced it Saturday afternoon and Jeanette helps me bleed the cylinder by pressing the clutch in while I opened and closed the bleeder valve. Well the clutch didn't respond, and now my only thoughts are a broken Fork on Throw out bearing. The clutch was replaced last year and it shouldn't have more than 25K miles on it. I don't have a manual with me, but the reservoir behind the instrument cluster that is for the brakes is the same one used for the clutch, Right? Anyone have any other ideas? Lee... and one broken 86 Vanagon GL
