Hi all,
Just getting round to re-building the engine on 'Muriel/ - my
88' Wolfsburg. When I got the re-build kit from Bus Depot, I also
got a tube of black/blue goop. This appears to be the head seal goop.
I notice that Bentley recommends that this go on the flat (head) side
of the seal and not on the lip (block) side. However, Herb (from the
archives) recommends both sides should be 'gooped'. Which is more
correct?? My heads were slightly pitted - nothing major - so we
JB-Welded them & sanded them flat.
Bentley & others also recommend using other yellow goop to
seal the cylinder head studs. The original studs don't appear to
have this & the re-build kit didn't come with it. Is this stuff
*really* important, and if so, where can I pick up a reasonable
substitute. I'm guessing Blue Hylomar silicone is *not* the right
substitute. Also, should I apply blue silicone seal to the water
gaskets or just leave them alone???
Regards,
Pete C (got the day off work tomorrow to finish the re-build!)
