Is the 5-speed transmission used in the South African vans the same as the 5-speed used in the diesel Vanagons, abet with different gearsets? The reason I am asking is, I figured that if this is so, I could use the front transmission mount, and the gearshift and front shift mechanism-housing from a 5-speed diesel Vanagon when upgrading from the standard 4-speed to a South African 5-speed. (I'm told that the 5-speed requires a different front transmission mount, and from what I can tell in the shop manual, the front shift-mechinism housing is the part of the shift linkage that contains the detents for the shifter. (This would eliminate the need to push down for 1st gear like reverse.) Opinions? Todd '88 Westy
