The way I understand it, the valve is manual on the core and the
switch up front only turns on the blower.  The valve handle on mine
is snapped off and I was playing around with it and, not knowing
which way was open or closed, closed it such that even with the
blower on, no heat comes out.

BTW, the valve does separate from the core quite easily, but I'm not
sure what's involved as far as sealing it up.
