I haven't had this happen yet on my 1982 Westy (odometer and speedometer
are non-funtioning currently.  However, it's a regular occurance with my
1980 Scirocco.  Just find a flat surfaced item (a penny works great) to
press against the trip.  When I don't get the button pushed in all the
way, it happens.
