from what I understood from the archives, 5.25" was the max for there. (I
also placed my 6.5" speakers near the hole.... they're way too big)

I just replaced my original rear speakers with 4" polks, and the two
original rear speakers had absolutely no corrosion on them at all.

I don't think corrosion is an issue back there. (at least on my van -
with A/C)
