I wouldn't clean that stainer (which is a filter) I would replace it entirely. I had a '84 GL with Auto box last year with similar symptoms. I got a kit to do the pan gasket, and filter and changed the oil and it worked great from that time on. I sell these kits for $30 and they are nice quality German. Ken Wilford Van-Again John 3:16
