I've had success with a Mac Powerbook, Motorola flip or startac phones,
and megahertz modems using claris e-mailer to get to aol.

It works fine as long as the cell reception is good, and you'll get a
connection speed of around 4800. I never tried it while roaming and have
no idea what effect (if any) that would have.

... but you said laptop, so I'm reading PC into that...I've never tried
this on a PC.
