It is probably the main seal.  You can try the "seal repair in a can"
method from your FLAPS.  These are just solvents that cause the rubber
to expand a bit and may work for awhile.

On my '84 manual tranny, dropping the transmission is much easier than
dropping the engine to replace this seal, but I don't know about autos.
Check the book before you start!
