My Bently (Pub date: 1991) has an axle nut torque value of 360 ft lb with 10 slots in the crown nut. It also has warnings of only using a 10 slot nut, correct torque and using a new cotter pin. It does not list any difference in Vanagons or Syncros from 1980-1991. 350 Nm / 253 ft lb sounds like a air cooled spec. Bug/Bus, not a vanagon??? Dana E Hager 87 Syncro Westy 84 Vanagon GL
