Probably the drive gear, the one next to the worm gear has come out of
its socket.  It is fairly easy to remove and inspect.  There were
several posts about it a while back.  I gave in and bought a new speedo,
before I discovered Vanagon.com, but found out later that you could
Super glue it in, pinch the end of shaft with cutters, and some other
innovative tricks to get it to work.  Will try them next time around.
