They come out just fine using vice-grips as a wrench to grab that edge near the base. Chewing up the ends make no difference since they are not reused anyway. -----Original Message----- From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com]On Behalf Of Coby Smolens Sent: Thursday, September 16, 1999 10:40 AM To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM Subject: Re: Woody's shear bolts Sorry to be so delayed - Outlook '98 took it upon itself to file this message in Junk Mail. Luckily I checked before dumping the lot... Tell it to Bill Gates. I don't drill them out at all. I use a cutoff wheel on a die grinder to cut a screw slot in the pointy head of the sheared-off bolt (abrasive disk on a Dremel, for the DIYer?), then take the thing off with a screwdriver. Actually, now I think of it, I've gotten them loose with a good pair of vise grips, judiciously applied. They're not very tight - they shear off in the tightening process before they get past 16 ft. lbs. or so.
