Folks,

I am a little embarressed to report that the problem was not at all with the
alternator,  but with thte field excitation.
The blue wire comming from the idiot light was broken inside the connector
where it connect to the wire comming off the
alternator.  The general consensus is that the "W" pin is the pin for the
tachometer.  I think I may use this pin in the future
should I find a tach.  Thank you all for your good responses
