If you want someone else to do it I would recommend German Transaxle in
Seattle, Wa (these are who I deal with).  They are a little pricer than some
others but are top notch.
I also have a Vanagon 4 speed that I have been wondering about ripping into.
Worst come to worst I could always put it back together and ship it off to GT
:)
I just wonder where to buy the rebuild parts from (VW dealer or who) as I
don't usually deal with tranny internals and don't know who supplies the
parts.
