Vehicle:  82 Vanagon Diesel

I would like to know how much I should torque down the rear axle nuts. I
checked in Mitchell Online at work, and it said 175 ft/lbs.  That
doesn't seem right to me.  It took alot more force than that to get them
off!  (3/4" drive bar with a pipe over it!)  ALso what is the proper
socket size for those nuts?  I used 1 13/16" on it.
