Thanks, everyone, for the many suggestions to solve noisy lifters.  Almost
every single reply suggested Marvel Mystery Oil in the crankcase, which I
will do as a preventative.  However, the noisy lifters noise turned out to
be an exhaust leak through a crack in the muffler pipe - Yay!  My lifters
are fine.
