In my not so extensive experience with the poptop conversion, the '86 and
newer use the aluminum strip on the top and the bottom, whereas the older
ones use staples on the top.  I was able to pinch an older canvas without
the top sewn-in strip into a newer poptop with aluminum.  I don't know
about retrofitting an earlier top with the later strips.
