Danno, may have lead me down the right path for the problem source as being the poor signal at the AFM. My search found the following: Volkswagen technical bulletin group 24 # 92-02 April 30th 1992 explains of the bucking/surging fix is an updated box that has a diode or something to clean the signal. Part # 025 906 302A $150.00. Installation is as easy as removing the connector to the AFM and installing in between it and the connector. A clue I was looking for from my wife was any change in the tachometer when the bucking happened. She noticed no change in the tach, no flutter or drop during the surging I than ruled out ignition related problems like the hall sender and grounds related to ignition. It looks now to be as simple as a fuel filter (doubtful, just replaced before this trip) or the big $150.00 part. Thanks to all who responded. Unless I could of missed other options I have the part lined up in Indianapolis. Thanks again Rob
