They were talking about the air-cooled T1 engines that run hotter with higher compression ratios than 7:1. The water-cooled Wasserboxer stock has a 9:1 ratio, Europeans have 10:1 ratio. The water-cooled can run higher compression ratios with no long term effects, i.e., 100,000 to 150,000 miles on a Wasserboxer is common. I know that Vanagons have a history of overheating (due more to lack of maintenance, part failure or radiant heat damage, then due to too high of compression) I have added the ceramic thermal barrier coatings to add in heat removal. Robert >> I wasn't referring to your engine work (Vanagon watercooled) but rather just giving you the scoop from Gene Berg on the supposed long life of a T1 motor that has been hopped up to 150hp (see your previous post). The high compression aircooleds with 150hp are lucky to last a race much less be viable daily drivers. This is common knowledge and supported by the info on Gene Berg's site. Just FYI. PS No one is paying attention to us anyway. They are all having too much fun making fun of British cars or are out racing their Vanagons :) Ken Wilford http://www.vanagain.com John 3:16 Phone: (856)-765-1583 Shop: (856)-327-0027 Fax: (856)-327-2242
