I've got an '84 Westy Wolfsburg with automatic. I was on my way to a friends house to put a rebuilt engine in the van and noticed a whining getting louder and louder. Found the final drive nearly empty of oil and full of metal. Ring and pinion shot. VW wants $1127 for new gear set. I found a used transaxle for $300. What does everyone think; should I replace the seals between the two sections on this tranny before I install it? I have a new torque converter seal; any other work I should do other than fluid/filter and gear oil changes before I install it? Thanks for the opinions.
